​​People are living longer and people are working longer. The average age at retirement continues to increase. The ability to attract and retain a knowledgeable and skilled workforce is key to a business' overall success, yet few employers are prepared and positioned to overcome the challenges ahead. 

  • Adopt a Lifespan Perspective in the workplace. This perspective views aging as dynamic, adaptive, and influenced by the environment. It recognizes patterns of change and transition that occur in different domains (e.g., biological/physical, cognitive, social).
  • A well-designed, employee-centered approach to the physical nature and organization of work benefits all workers regardless of their age.
  • Many workplace accommodations are easy to make and are inexpensive. Appropriate acoustics and seating, optimal lighting, and new information technology hardware and software can smooth the way to continued work for older individuals.
